CtE: New WC3 Project

CtE First ImpressionCapture the Egg (CtE) is the working title of the a Warcraft 3 Project that I am currently working on: Fighting each other in frozen gorges and on snow- covered plains, two opposing gangs of mercenaries are on a hunt for the last eggs of the rare Frostwyrm.

CtE is designed to provide fast-paced capture the flag gameplay and emphasizes co- operative PvP and a carefully balanced variety of unique classes with interesting combat mechanics. We want to get rid of the old “use ability, use ability, wait for mana to regenerate, use ability, repeat until dead“. The team working on CtE consists of Tjuhl (suggestions, testing) and me (mapping, coding, unit design, testing). So far, the terrain is finished and I am currently implementing the different combat systems in JASS.

The Battle for Wesnoth: A Short Review

BfW CombatA turn-based strategy game with 2d graphics? That was already boring 15 years ago! At least that is what I thought, when first heard of Battle for Wesnoth. I could not have been more mistaken!

Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game set in the fictional fantasy world of Wesnoth. The game emphasizes simplicity: Very few resources and unit characteristics make the game easy to learn but hard to master. The game is open source and thus totally free, an advantage that comes at the cost of frequent crashes.

Published by Gamasutra

I’m happy to announce that my master’s thesis has been published on Gamasutra/Game Career Guide.

Gamasutra FeatureAbstract:
In order to rapidly develop digital games for psycho- physiological experiments, a coherent and flexible development environment is required. Something that allows researchers to design their experiments, build the stimulus game and easily integrate all required data acquisition functionality into it.

This thesis shows the design and implementation of such a framework. Methods for gathering player-related data are compared to establish a theoretical foundation for the framework. The logging framework is implemented as a set of Torque X components and an example game is developed in order to demonstrate the framework and the different logging components.

You can read the feature article and download the thesis at Master’s Thesis: A Framework for Psychophysiological Data Acquisition in Digital Games.

Southfury Banks v1.1

Version 1.1 of Southfury Banks is mainly focused on improving the general game flow and the accessibility of the unit upgrade system.

SfB Version 1.1 GUISfB Version 1.1 Cinematic

In addition to a number of smaller interface improvements and an (extended) game preparation phase, a cinematic introduction was added to briefly summarize the background story, show all important locations, and clarify the victory conditions.

Major Changes:

  • Added cinematic introduction.
  • All possible upgrades for a unit and the required tomes are now visible at all times. Upgrades, whose requirements are not met are grayed out.
  • Added game preparation phase: 30 second countdown during which players can look around the entire map freely. After 30 seconds, player units are spawned, the camera is locked to each player’s unit, and the game begins.
  • Added a respawn timer to the GUI, indicating the time until a player unit respawns after being killed.
  • Added a kill / death ratio to the GUI, indicating how many opponents a player killed and how many times he has died.
  • Added a player statistics overview, showing a player’s faction, name, kills, and deaths at the end of each game.
  • Increased respawn time for player units to 10 seconds.
  • Reduced time to capture a flag from 2 minutes to 1 minute.
  • Book vendors no longer have health and mana regeneration auras. Instead, they now sell one-time health and mana regeneration for 250 gold.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the Alliance Arcanist and Horde Witch Doctor from being interrupted while summoning.
  • Fixed a bug that occurred when more than one player were assaulting the same flag.
